The Edinburg Economic Development Corporation, The Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library, Workforce Solutions and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Career Center joined forces on October 27, 2016 to sponsor several free work readiness workshops and Job Fair.
The workshops were geared toward helping develop the talents and capabilities of people looking for a job. Specifically, they focused on helping job seekers learn how to successfully apply and be hired by employers for jobs and careers within the Rio Grande Valley.
The first workshop held on Tuesday, October 25, was a Résumé Writing Workshop. It offered a helpful review of the best practices in résumé presentation, language and formatting.
The second workshop focused on the interview and was scheduled for Wednesday, October 26. It offered helpful tips as to the most practical techniques in interview preparation, research, presentation, and follow-up activities.
UTRGV Career Advisors Ricardo Ramirez and Manuel Zavala lead the Résumé and Interview workshops. The workshops culminated with a job fair offering various employment opportunities available throughout the City of Edinburg. More than 30 employers were on site interviewing job seekers. Participating employers included: City of Edinburg, UPS, Denimburg, formerly known as Santana Textiles, Bert Ogden, Walmart, Oceangate Investment Group, among others. The overall success of the job fair concluded with over 530 people in attendance.
The Edinburg Job & Resource Fair is set to match qualified persons for jobs being offered within city limits, said Leticia Reyes, Director of Business Development and Public Affairs, Edinburg Economic Development Corporation.
“Our job fairs are designed to make it easier and more convenient for employers and prospective employees to get together,” said Reyes. “They are for every kind of person, from people who want to get a job for the first time, to individuals who are already employed, but are looking for a better job or a different career.” People looking for employment will be able to learn about the job vacancies from the employers, leave their résumés, and in some cases, employers will conduct a job interview immediately, she added.
These job fairs are held on a quarterly basis. The next one is programmed for February 2017.
The current annual unemployment rate for Edinburg is 5.5%.
